Happy Death Day
No doubt you have been alerted through your local media outlet that this is the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. I could write a lot about this event, but unfortunately this is not the week for me to do that. However, if you wish to celebrate this sacred holiday by watching an Elvis movie, I recommend this as a helpful aid to your selection.
Turner Classic Movies is showing an Elvis Presley marathon… I caught most of a concert film called That’s the Way It Is…
Viva Las Vegas on TCM
Wow! The platonic ideal of Elvis movies.
I thought I’d seen Viva Las Vegas when I was little but, seeing it again tonight, almost nothing seemed familiar. The only things I remembered were Elvis’s hotness in his Dylan Dog outfit in the title number and my childhood ambition to become Ann-Margaret.
Wish I’d had time for the rest of the marathon today, but it’s just as well — too much of that stuff and your brain melts.

Wait….
Isn’t Elvis just a poor man’s Johnny Cash? Or is it the other way around?
To this day I have yet to see a single Elvis movie and I’m pretty much all right with that.
I was in Hawaii when Elvis died (which seems appropriate). I was 11.
I was in Italy when Sinatra died. Which also seems appropriate.
Since those two are arguably the two most iconic American singers, it would appear there’s some kind of connection between me taking a trip across the ocean and an iconic American singer dying.
Whoever’s #3 should pay me a fee to stay continental.
I’ll contact Madonna’s people for you.
That will probably coincide with my whirlwind tour of The Holy Land…
1001 Swingin’ Nights in Harum Scarum!!
Fantastic!! Is that the campest movie that John Walters never made?
My Godmother still wears black on his anniversary, and made the pilgrimage to Graceland for the 25th anniversary. For her 50th birthday I had to learn a bunch of Elvis classics on the piano! lol
Actually, I somehow missed it. They stuck God-knows-what on Yahoo headlines yesterday, which is the only news I really read. And since I’m into all things iconic and deathly, I am appalled to hear I missed this anniversary. Where is the media when you actually want them?
The first chapter of a book called “When Elvis Died” will give you chills. I highly recommend it. I have yet to read the rest, however, because I keep rereading the first chapter. (Or maybe it’s the prologue?)

I may have crossed a line, as I have just made my first ever lolcat! 🙂
